Critical Alert: April 2025 Windows Security Update Disables Windows Hello on Select

Overview of the Issue

Microsoft has reported significant disruptions for some users, where the recent April 2025 security updates have impaired the ability to access accounts using Windows Hello. This issue predominantly affects systems operating both the client and server platforms installed with the KB5055523 update, but only under certain conditions.

Affected Devices

Devices equipped with security-enhanced features such as Dynamic Root of Trust for Measurement (DRTM) or System Guard Secure Launch tend to face these challenges after the application of the KB5055523 update. In scenarios involving a system reset or file retention, users could find themselves unable to utilize Windows Hello for authentication.

Common Error Messages Include:

  • ‘Something happened and your PIN isn’t available. Click to set up your PIN again.’
  • ‘Sorry something went wrong with face setup.’

Temporary Solutions

In the absence of a permanent resolution, Microsoft suggests the following interim solutions to regain access:

  • For PIN issues: Users should respond to the ‘Set my PIN’ prompt at the login screen to re-enroll in Windows Hello.
  • For facial recognition problems: Navigate to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options > Facial recognition (Windows Hello) and select Set up. Then, proceed by following the on-screen instructions to re-enroll.

Recent Related Fixes and Updates

Earlier this Tuesday, Microsoft successfully rectified an authentication bug linked to the KB5055523 update affecting those with Credential Guard and Kerberos PKINIT pre-auth security protocol enabled. Additional precautionary measures were also introduced for Windows 11 24H2 systems utilizing SenseShield Technology, following discovery of conflicts leading to critical system errors, including the dreaded blue or black screen of death (BSOD).

Other Notable Precautions:

Microsoft has also enforced upgrade blocks on systems with specific software, like Dirac audio enhancements and tools such as Easy Anti-Cheat and Safe Exam Browser, which have shown potential compatibility issues with the latest updates.

As updates continue to roll out, it remains essential for users to stay informed on how these changes could impact their system functionality and security protocols.
