Brave Search has introduced a new feature called Rerank, which allows users to define search results ordering preferences and set specific sites rank higher.
Brave Search is a privacy-focused search tool created by Brave Software, which uses its own web index to generate search results.
It is marketed as a privacy-first alternative to Google or Bing search engines, which make extensive use of trackers and create detailed user profiles to generate targeted results.
According to the latest stats, Brave Search now has over 75 million users and handles 1.2 billion queries every month.
Today, Brave Search announced Rerank, a new feature that gives users the ability to boost or downgrade domains from their search results.
The feature is accessible via a new panel on the right side of the search results page, which displays a summary of the results for the given search term.
Users may click on the thumbs up or thumbs down button under each domain to up-rank or down-rank the result in future searches.
This way, users can prioritize in the search results the sites they trust more and send to the bottom of the list, or even eliminate entirely, those that don’t meet their quality.
“Rerank enables users to easily adjust search results according to their preferences, explicitly, while being in full control,” said Arjaldo Karaj, VP of Brave Search.
“No opaque personalization is done by unknown algorithms, as Rerank puts users in charge of their search experience.”
However users choose to leverage Rerank, the adjustments will be limited to their account alone. This way, every user on the network or computer can benefit from personalized results linked to their account.
Also, Brave will not collect Rerank data to adjust the search results. Brave Search will continue to operate without change.
Brave clarified that Rerank settings are stored locally and passed to the search tool via a cookie, which is not used for tracking.
Users can clear their preferences and get Brave Search back to its default state at any time.
Rerank is based on Goggles, a feature introduced in 2022, allowing users to set their own rules and filters to override Brave Search’s default algorithms for generating search results.
The new feature is not intended to replace Goggles but rather allow users to adjust search results quicker and easier.
